Market Drivers:
As data center hardware continues to evolve and become more powerful, the need for effective cooling solutions continues to grow. Liquid cooling systems provide better thermal management, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of your equipment. Especially important for mission-critical applications and high-performance computing workloads.
Continuous advancements in liquid cooling technology, such as improved coolants, pump designs, and heat exchangers, are driving market growth. These innovations make liquid cooling more reliable, cost-effective, and easier to implement in data center environments.
To reduce energy consumption and operating costs, data center operators are turning to liquid cooling solutions to improve overall energy efficiency. Liquid cooling helps reduce power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduces the data center’s carbon footprint.
Growing concerns about environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility are driving the adoption of liquid cooling in data centers. Liquid cooling solutions help achieve more sustainable operations by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Restraint:
At present, liquid cooling technology, especially immersion liquid cooling technology, still lacks large-scale application in data centers, and lacks corresponding national or industry standards for effective regulation and support. There is a lack of standardized interfaces and interoperability between liquid cooling solutions from different vendors.
Traditional air cooling systems require a lot of space for air ducts and radiators, while liquid cooling is based on the design of liquid containers and the convenience of personnel maintenance, which inevitably limits the scalability of the data center and results in space utilization lower.
Liquid cooling can offer energy efficiency benefits, but concerns related to the environmental impact of the coolant and the sustainability of liquid cooling solutions may limit adoption, particularly in regions with strict environmental regulations.
Opportunity:
Data centers are entering a new era, with applications requiring unprecedented compute and core count demands. Data centers are increasingly demanding high performance, high frequency, intensive workload conditions, multi-core computing including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and end-to-end data center solutions. Liquid cooling technology provides powerful power and heat dissipation at the lowest operating temperature, efficient and fast.
Green and low-carbon development of data centers has become an industry consensus, so the impact of coolants on the environment is an important evaluation requirement. Generally, the environmental impact of coolants is measured by ozone depletion potential (ODP), global warming potential (GWP), and pollution to soil and groundwater.
ODP describes the ability of a substance to destroy stratospheric ozone, and GWP is used to indicate the magnitude of a substance's impact on global warming. The smaller the ODP and GWP values, the smaller the negative impact of the coolant on the environment. Hydrocarbon and silicone coolants have very low ODP and GWP, and the environmental impact of fluorocarbon coolants is more prominent. With the global emphasis on environmental protection, fluorocarbon coolants with higher ODP have been eliminated, and most products currently in use have an ODP of zero. GWP indicators vary. For example, PFC has strong stability, a long life in the atmosphere, and a GWP value of thousands, while HFE has a lower GWP value in the hundreds. Fluorocarbon liquids should always be used in sealed systems to ensure that they are released into the atmosphere as little as possible.
In terms of soil and groundwater pollution, hydrocarbon and silicone coolants have low evaporation capacity. If they leak in large quantities, they will cause soil or groundwater pollution. Although most synthetic oils are classified as biodegradable, leaks also need to be controlled and cleaned up in a timely manner. At the time of scrapping, all coolants should be treated or recycled, and disposed of in strict accordance with local environmental laws and regulations, management obligations and guidelines in MSDS.
In order to reduce the consumption of high-GWP fluorinated liquids, some governments in the EU have taken measures such as GWP weighted taxes and GWP restrictions for specific applications. EU regulations stipulate that equipment containing fluorinated liquids should be regularly checked for leaks to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere, and liquids with higher GWP values require more frequent leak checks. Therefore, in order to reduce the difficulty of later maintenance, data centers should give priority to coolants that do not require or only require minimal regulatory restrictions (environmentally friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable, etc.).
