0 WSTS Projects 89.9% Semiconductor Market Growth in 2026 as Memory Surge Outpaces Logic Design みんなに公開
Market Definition and Scale
Semiconductors are sometimes referred to as integrated circuits (ICs) or microchips, made from pure elements—typically silicon or germanium—or compounds such as gallium arsenide. In a process called doping, small amounts of impurities are added to these pure elements, causing large changes in the conductivity of the material. Due to their role in the fabrication of electronic devices, semiconductors are an important part of modern life: without them, there would be no smartphones, radios, TVs, computers, video games, or advanced medical diagnostic equipment. The global semiconductor IC design market reached USD 526.8 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 780.77 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 4.6% during the forecast period. This growth rate is notably lower than the broader semiconductor market’s recent trajectory, a divergence that reflects the composition of the IC design segment: it includes mature analog, MCU, and power management designs that grow slowly, alongside AI accelerators and high-performance computing logic that grow explosively. The aggregate CAGR is a weighted average of these divergent trajectories, and it understates the structural reallocation occurring within the design landscape.
Chip-Type Segmentation
As well as multiple generations of chips, there are also multiple types of semiconductors. A high-level list includes analog, connectivity, discrete, DRAM and NAND memory, general purpose logic, microcontrollers (MCUs), microprocessors, and more. Analog ICs, MCUs, and power management chips are almost exclusively made at trailing-node processes, and smaller is not necessarily better for these categories. This segmentation matters for understanding the 4.6% CAGR. Memory design—DRAM and NAND—is cyclical and capital-intensive, and its revenue swings are driven by pricing rather than unit design wins. General purpose logic and microprocessors are increasingly bifurcated between AI-optimized designs, which command premium pricing and rapid iteration, and commodity designs, which face margin compression. Analog and power management designs grow with industrial and automotive electrification, at rates below the AI segment but with more stable demand profiles.
Recent market data illustrates the magnitude of the AI-driven divergence. WSTS revised its 2026 semiconductor market growth forecast to 89.9%, a dramatic upward revision from its December 2025 estimate of 26.3%, with memory alone projected to grow 249.5% to exceed USD 803.9 billion . This is not a normal cycle; it is a structural repricing of memory and AI logic driven by data center build-out. The IC design market’s 4.6% CAGR through 2030 must be read against this backdrop: the forecast period average obscures the fact that 2026 is an outlier year in which memory design revenue is surging while non-AI logic design grows at a fraction of that rate.
Competitive Landscape
According to QYResearch Semiconductor Research Center, the global key manufacturers of semiconductor IC design include Intel, Samsung-Memory, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Broadcom, SK Hynix, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Texas Instruments (TI), Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and others. In 2023, the global top ten players held approximately 56.0% of revenue share.
The fabless segment of this landscape has undergone visible reshuffling. TrendForce’s Q2 2026 global Fabless TOP 10 ranking shows combined revenue of USD 141.45 billion, up 73% year-on-year, but the distribution is highly uneven. NVIDIA alone accounts for 64% of the top ten’s total revenue, a concentration without precedent in the fabless era . Broadcom holds second place with year-on-year growth exceeding 110%, the fastest among the group. AMD surpassed Qualcomm to take third place with USD 11.536 billion in revenue, while Qualcomm fell to fourth with declines in both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth . Marvell grew 34% year-on-year and 12% sequentially; MPS grew 48% year-on-year and 22% sequentially, with its Enterprise Data segment reaching USD 381 million, up 164.3% year-on-year, driven by AI-related power solutions . This dispersion is analytically significant: the fabless hierarchy is no longer ordered by smartphone or PC volumes but by AI infrastructure exposure. Qualcomm’s automotive segment grew 61% year-on-year and has sustained double-digit growth for 23 consecutive quarters, but this was insufficient to offset the shift in market leadership toward AI accelerators .
Regional Dynamics and China’s Design Trajectory
Asia-Pacific remains the largest hub for manufacturing scale, advanced packaging, and high-volume integration, with design activities leveraging proximity to foundries and OSAT providers to compress iteration cycles . Within this region, China’s IC design sector has sustained high growth. According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, domestic IC design revenue reached RMB 236.5 billion in the first half of 2026, up 20.1% year-on-year, outpacing the software industry’s 9.5% growth . For full-year 2025, China’s IC design sales reached RMB 835.73 billion, up 29.4%, accounting for 47.67% of the country’s total integrated circuit industry and ranking first among design, manufacturing, and packaging . IDC data indicates that China’s IC design market share surpassed Taiwan’s in 2025 and is expected to expand to approximately 45% in 2026, with the United States retaining the top position on the strength of NVIDIA, AMD, and hyperscaler ASIC development .
This growth is not evenly distributed across chip types. China’s design output remains concentrated in communications and consumer electronics, which together exceed 60% of revenue, while computer chips account for only 7.7%, far below the international average of 25% . The AI infrastructure build-out has been the primary demand driver: domestic intelligent computing center deployments and AI server demand have pulled through orders for computing chips, memory interfaces, and NOR storage, with companies such as Montage Technology, Hygon, and GigaDevice reporting sequential shipment growth . Automotive electronics and industrial control form a stable base: new energy vehicle electronic control, automotive MCUs, and power driver chips continue to increase domestic content, while industrial automation and photovoltaic storage analog chip orders grow steadily .
Restraints
The principal restraint on the IC design market’s growth trajectory is not demand but the bifurcation of design economics. AI accelerator design requires advanced-node access, high-bandwidth memory integration, and packaging co-optimization—capabilities concentrated among a small number of fabless companies with the scale to absorb mask and tape-out costs at 3nm and below. For the majority of design companies operating at mature nodes, growth is constrained by price competition and by the capital intensity of maintaining design starts across fragmented end markets.
A second constraint is the dependency structure in China’s design sector. High-end general-purpose processors and high-speed interface IP cores remain heavily reliant on foreign suppliers, and precious metal raw material price increases are compressing margins at small and medium design enterprises . The localization narrative is real but incomplete: domestic design revenue is growing, yet the most advanced designs still depend on external IP and foundry capacity. The offsetting factor is that domestic wafer fabrication and advanced packaging capacity continues to expand, gradually reducing tape-out costs and supporting the design sector’s margin recovery .
A third constraint is the memory cycle itself. The 249.5% memory growth projected for 2026 is a pricing phenomenon as much as a volume phenomenon, driven by HBM allocation and general DRAM shortage . Design companies serving memory interfaces benefit from this surge, but the cyclicality of memory pricing means that design revenue tied to memory content is inherently volatile. The 4.6% CAGR smooths this volatility, but it does not eliminate it.
Opportunity
The most significant opportunity is the diffusion of AI inference from data centers into edge and endpoint devices. MPS’s enterprise data growth of 164.3% and its development of 800V data center architecture power products illustrate how power management design is being pulled into the AI infrastructure value chain . OmniVision’s emerging market segment—professional imaging, machine vision and robotics, and endpoint AI—grew 47.12% year-on-year, with machine vision and robotics up 71.15%, demonstrating that design demand is broadening beyond the data center into industrial and embedded AI applications . For design companies without the scale to compete in training accelerators, inference-optimized and application-specific designs represent a more accessible growth path.
A second opportunity lies in the automotive and industrial analog design segment. Qualcomm’s automotive revenue growth of 61% year-on-year, sustained across 23 consecutive quarters, and Infineon’s and Texas Instruments’ entrenched positions in automotive and industrial semiconductors, indicate that this segment offers durable growth independent of consumer electronics cycles . The design content per vehicle is increasing as ADAS, electrification, and in-cabin sensing become standard, and the qualification barriers in automotive favor design companies with established safety and reliability credentials.
Analyst Observations
Two underappreciated dynamics merit attention. First, the 4.6% CAGR is almost certainly too low for the 2024–2026 window and may be too high for the late-2020s period, because the forecast period straddles an anomalous memory cycle. WSTS’s upward revision of 2026 growth from 26.3% to 89.9% within a single year illustrates how rapidly the baseline is shifting . The strategic implication is that companies planning against a 4.6% average may underinvest in AI-adjacent design capabilities during the surge and overinvest in mature-node capacity as the cycle normalizes. The IC design market’s true growth rate, stripped of memory pricing effects, is closer to the high single digits in AI logic and low single digits in mature analog and MCU segments.
Second, the fabless concentration around NVIDIA—64% of top-ten revenue—is a structural feature that will not revert. NVIDIA’s data center revenue reached USD 51.22 billion in its fiscal Q3 2026, up 66% year-on-year, driven by Blackwell platform shipments . This scale advantage funds R&D and ecosystem investment that no competitor can match in the training accelerator segment. The competitive frontier is therefore not “who will catch NVIDIA” but “where will the next design value pool form.” The evidence points toward inference at the edge, automotive compute, and power management for AI infrastructure—segments where design requirements differ from training accelerators and where incumbency is less entrenched. The 56.0% top-ten concentration in IC design overall understates the concentration in training accelerators and overstates it in analog and embedded segments, where fragmentation persists and design-win economics favor specialized suppliers.
